Armando Duarte
Professor, contemporary choreographer, and researcher of Brazilian popular culture with a master's degree from NYU/Tisch School of the Arts and a bachelor's degree in physical education from the University of São Paulo, Brazil. He has received numerous awards throughout his career, including the Best Choreographer Award from the São Paulo Association of Art Critics of Brazil, and has choreographed for companies in the United States, Brazil, and other countries. His academic research involves in-depth investigation of Samba and Carnival, from which he has created courses that offer students theoretical and practical movement experiences related to this popular culture. He has lectured on the subject at various universities and conferences in the United States and Brazil. He is a two-time winner of the Iowa Old Gold Summer Fellowship; and has received numerous grants from the UI Support Program for Arts and Humanities, the Arts and Humanities Initiative Program, and the Obermann Center for Interdisciplinary Research Fellowships for Advanced Studies.
