The Brazilian dancer and choreographer Ana Maria Piazza Pfitscher da Silva, 47, from Porto Alegre, is the new director of the Ballet Company of the Staatstheater Kassel, the opera house of Documenta, in Germany. Despite being virtually unknown on the German scene, she was chosen from among 40 selected competitors, dancers from various nations. Besides being the first woman and foreigner in this role after many years, she is also the first Brazilian director of the company. Married and mother of three children (ages 10, 14, and 20), with a career of about 30 years entirely based in São Paulo and despite holding several dance awards in Brazil, her jump to Europe took place only a few years ago. She first came to work in Germany in 1996, invited by Brazilian choreographer Ismael Ivo to be his assistant director at the then-new dance company of the Deutsches National Theater in the eastern German city of Weimar, which was closed for financial reasons last year.
