Bodiography Contemporary Ballet (BCB) was established in New York City in 2000 as a step toward creating a unique oasis in the dance world. Maria Caruso, founder and artistic director, began her crusade to revolutionize the world of contemporary ballet by creating a new standard of dance performance and education. This new standard included the employment of college-educated, artistic, and proficient dancers who did not fit the stereotypical ballet aesthetic of the time and were eager to embrace Bodiography's innovative mission, one that continues to enable artists to perform, create, and educate the world about health and wellness within an arts brand model. In 2020, following the development and independence of four additional performance branches, the global touring company officially began to be recognized as Maria Caruso's Bodiography. The collective continues to be recognized internationally for celebrating the human body in all its diversity and attracting new audiences through Caruso's contemporary ballet vocabulary, unique in our current dance landscape. In addition to presenting Caruso's repertoire of over 125 ballets, a number of celebrated choreographic voices have influenced the growth and acclaim of the performing ensemble. With a compilation of works commissioned by company artists, alumni, and guest artists such as Johann Renvall, Ze'eva Cohen, Anjali Austin, James Martin, Lynne Taylor-Corbett, Ilana Suprun-Clyde, Giverny Welsch, Antonello Appicella, Ina Colizza, and Virgine Mecene, the re-enactment of masterpieces from the Martha Graham archives, and partnerships with world-class musicians and composers, the company continues to receive critical acclaim with each passing performance.
